Apologetics

Apologetics is the defense of the Christian faith in the face of opposing and conflicting belief systems. Students will examine the most common objections to the Christian faith at the university level and learn to respond to these. Scripture study and interaction with skeptics will also help students learn to think about their faith and communicate it effectively. In addition, students will cover the foundational truths once more before graduation.

Christian Living

This course takes a look at several of the cultural issues Christians face today and discuss what the Bible has to say about those issues. Students will develop strategies to help navigate a post-modern culture and these cultural issue with a Biblical foundation.

New Testament Survey

This course looks at the Bible as a whole and examines each book for specific information. Emphasis is given to identifying the authorship, purpose, theme, and flow of each book as it relates to the historical context in which the book was written. Students will gain a better understanding of the connections among the New Testament Books and will identify fulfillments of prophecy as they unfold in Scripture.

Old Testament Survey

This college-level course focuses both on the big picture of the Old Testament as a whole and on the specific books of the Old Testament. The emphasis for each book will be the authorship, purpose, theme, and flow. Students will discover each book within its historical context and will learn to apply life principles from the content of the material.

English I

In 9th grade English, students review the fundamentals of grammar, such as parts of speech, sentence structure, capitalization, and punctuation. New grammar concepts, such as imperative and indicative mood verbs, determiners, qualifiers, and subordinating conjunctions, are introduced, as are new usage skills, such as dangling and misplaced modifiers. The writing projects continue to give the students an opportunity to use the grammar skills they are learning and focus on improving sentence variety. The study of literature includes thematic units that cover topics such as courage, faith, joy, justice, and humility. The students learn to apply these themes through various writing projects.

English II
Grade Level: 10
Credit: 1
Students in 10th grade English review fundamental grammar skills and are introduced to concepts that enable them to become better writers. The course includes a basic review of parts of speech, sentence patterns, and usage skills. Students also learn two new sentence patterns, subjunctive mood verbs, and ways to fix modifier errors in writing. The writing projects focus on improving sentence variety, fluency, and paragraph development. The study of literature introduces students to literary devices such as character development, plot, setting, theme, imagery, and figurative language. It covers both poetry and prose and introduces the students to authors, such as Dickens, Frost, Browning, Tennyson, Tolstoy, and Poe. The students learn to analyze literature through various writing projects. The course includes a study of vocabulary and spelling to prepare the students for standardized testing.

English III

Students in 11th grade English review the eight parts of speech, verbal phrases/clauses, usage, mechanics, and the seven sentence patterns. New concepts include tense sequence, perfect verbals, and adverbial nouns. Students learn the writing process and writing strategies such as variety, emphasis, and sentence logic. Writing projects include a research paper, literary analysis, analytical essay, interview, memoir, analogy, in-class essay, and letter to the editor. Students are introduced to more than seventy authors in a study that connects the authors’ lives and beliefs as revealed in their writings with the corresponding literary periods. Lessons examine Colonial-Revolutionary, Romantic, Realistic/Naturalistic, and Modern literature and issues such as Darwinism and religious liberalism. The novel The Scarlet Letter is included as part of the literature study. Lessons in vocabulary and spelling prepare the students for standardized testing.

English IV

This class provides a thorough review of fundamental grammar skills such as parts of speech, sentence patterns, phrases, and clauses.  Graduated writing assignments allow for practice of grammar skills.  The writing assignments range from the basic five paragraph essay to a major ten page research project.  Students practice the MLA documentation style.  In addition, reading comprehension is further developed through the study of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the Stuart Period (450-1688).  Both individual and group literary teaching presentations promote cooperation and reinforce skills for public speaking.  Students present both oral and written book reports from biography, fiction, and nonfiction.

Spanish I

The building blocks of language (vocabulary and grammar) are presented and practiced in context, their uses presented clearly to students through abundant practice of frequent interactive exercises. A student’s ability to use the language is extended in application exercises, where newly learned content is combined with familiar material. Upon completion of this course, the students should have developed a working vocabulary, which will enable them to communicate on a basic level in the present tense, and they should be able to express themselves in a basic way in written and oral form.

Spanish II

The objective of the second year of Spanish is to continue building the linguistic foundation begun the previous year. There is a thorough review of the material covered in Spanish I. Greater emphasis will be given to conversation in contextualized, real-world situations. Students will also learn reading skills that will help them read increasingly difficult passages they will encounter in two short novels. Students will spend a large portion of the year learning to communicate effectively in the past tense and will develop reading and listening skills in addition to speaking and writing. Students will learn about various cultural elements of Spanish-speaking countries including history, art, and media. The goal of the course is for students to become confident and comfortable in their grasp of the Spanish language and the ability to communicate in a variety of real-world situations.

MATHEMATICS

Algebra I

Credit: 1

This course is the first level of high school math. It is intended to build the foundation for further study in mathematics. The major concepts to be introduced are: simplifying and evaluating algebraic expressions; solving linear equations, inequalities, and systems of equations in one and two variables; factoring polynomials; solving word problems; graphing linear equations; simplifying radical expressions; and solving fractional, decimal, and percentage word problems. The recommended calculators for this course are TI-84 or TI-84 Plus. Calculators must be on the acceptable list from the College Board. The calculator will be used for future math courses as well.

Algebra II

Algebra II is a course that will extend the student’s algebraic skills in computing, analyzing, transforming, graphing, identifying, solving, and communicating relationships among functions. Students will be introduced to new concepts including polynomial logarithmic radical, exponential, and rational functions. The class will investigate and make conjectures verbally, algebraically, numerically, and graphically, both with and without the technology of the graphing calculator. Students are required to have an acceptable graphing calculator.

Geometry
Grade Level: 10
Credit: 1

Geometry is a college-preparatory course presenting properties of plane and solid figures using a variety of approaches and connecting algebra to geometry. The course will help to develop the student’s ability to reason logically, to make conjectures, and validate them through various types of proofs, or to refute them through counterexamples. This course will incorporate the geometric concepts to problem-solving in the real world. Students will use calculators and other technology.

Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry

Credit: 1

This course is designed to cover topics in Algebra ranging from polynomial, rational, and exponential functions to conic sections. Trigonometry concepts such as Law of Sines and Cosines will be introduced.  Students will then begin analytic geometry and calculus concepts such as limits, derivatives, and integrals.  This class is important for any student planning to take a college algebra or college pre-calculus class.

Senior Math

This course is designed to help students prepare for first-year college level math. Students will continue studying concepts such as polynomial logarithmic radical, exponential, and rational functions. This fall semester course prepares students for responsible citizenship with a discussion of the principles and mechanics of a constitutional republic. The curriculum provides insight on a variety of topics such as the three branches of government, political parties, elections, foreign policy, and more, all from a biblical perspective.

U.S. History

This survey course for eleventh graders covers the history of the United States of America from the Reconstruction Era up to the current events of the 21st century. Students will see the work of God as He orchestrated the history of the nation. This class is designed to help students develop analytical skills, enhance essay writing ability, and improve reading comprehension. The course will focus primarily on the political, social, and economic developments that shaped America and its people. Through this course, students can gain a new appreciation of our country’s history.

World History

This class is a survey of major events and cultures that have shaped Western civilization since the beginning of time. First, the ancient cultures of Egypt, Greece, and Rome are examined. This is followed by an extended look at the Medieval period, which concludes with the Renaissance and Reformation and their dramatic impact on the world. The last segment of the course will cover modern history, with emphasis on the major developments of the 20th century, including World War I and World War II. The class includes lecture and discussion, note-taking, in-class assignments, projects, and outside reading.

Physical Education

Physical education in the 9th grade focuses on encouraging students to see the need of maintaining an active lifestyle throughout their lifetimes. They are taught skills that can be used in a variety of recreational and fitness activities. Students play sports, workout in a weight room, participate in body weight exercises, and develop cardiovascular fitness. Students are graded on knowledge of sports rules, participation, fitness testing, responsibility, and basic sports skills. Character is also developed during fitness and game time, as students are taught to exhibit the fruits of the Spirit.

Health

Health class is designed to teach students how to be balanced in the five areas of spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, and social health. They are taught how to keep their bodies running efficiently through exercise and nutrition. Students are also taught basic first aid, disease prevention, personal hygiene, and environmental issues.

Biology

Biology is a college-preparatory course designed to give a basic understanding of the science used to study living organisms and how they function, approached from a classification perspective. The first semester focuses on chemistry, cell structure, cell function, biochemical energy pathways, genetics, DNA, and life processes. The second semester includes taxonomy, classification, statistics, histograms, five kingdoms study, dissection, and anatomy of several levels of organisms, evolution vs. creation, nutrition, microbiology, and insect collection, ending with the study of human anatomy and body systems. Skills emphasized include measurement, scientific method, conversion, laboratory-report writing, use of computers, researching on the Internet, probe technology, microscopy, probability, deviation, and chemical testing.

Anatomy & Physiology

Human Anatomy and Physiology is a laboratory-based course that investigates the structure and function of the human body. Topics covered will include the basic organization of the body; biochemical composition; and major body systems along with the impact of diseases on certain systems. Students will engage in many topics and competencies related to truly understanding the structure and function of the human body. Working from the topics of basic anatomical terminology to the biochemical composition of the human body, all the way into great detail of each of the major systems of the body, students will learn through reading materials, study guides, unit worksheets, group work, projects, and labs. High levels of achievement will be in effect. Students will be responsible for proper use of lab equipment, lab reports, and projects assigned throughout each unit. One of the goals of this course is to prepare students with the skills necessary to be successful in future science classes in college.

Chemistry

Chemistry will introduce students to the study of the physical world by examining: Matter and Energy, Atoms and Moles, The Periodic Table, Ions and Ionic Compounds, Covalent Compounds, Chemical Equations and Reactions, Stoichiometry, and the Causes of Change. Students will explore these concepts through textbook readings, online assignments, and hands-on laboratory activities, and projects.

Art

In art, the student is taught to draw things as they are realistically seen.  Reproduction using proper perspective, dimension, and proportion is a constant. The course is based on the ability to draw as one sees while applying the fundamental rules of the craft through basic mediums, techniques, the uses of marks and tones. Art class can be enjoyed regardless of whether one uses this “constantly refined talent” for enjoyment, capturing aesthetic beauty, or the prospect of a future career. An honest self-examination for motive, combined with continual practice, will encourage the individual to grow in the timeless act of drawing. The students will submit their finest work for competition in the State Fine Arts Festival.

Forensic Science

Forensic science is a tool for practicing science as inquiry. For every piece of physical evidence brought in for analysis, the student must apply the scientific method. The student must observe, collect and classify data while looking for relationships and form a hypothesis. The student must then test the hypothesis and advance to a conclusion. Students must then be prepared to defend conclusions based on their own empirical evidence.

High School Choir
Grade Level: 9-12
Credit: 1

Membership in the PVCS High School Choir begins in the 9th grade.  Students are instructed in vocal technique, breathing, ear training, and reading music.  The course of study includes a Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, TACS competition, and other performance opportunities when they arise. The choir performs SATB music both with accompaniment and a cappella.  The literature includes spirituals, semi-classical works, folk songs, and sacred works.

 

Yearbook
Grade Level: 11-12
Credit: 1

Members of the yearbook staff receive a variety of opportunities to exercise their creativity, including photography, page design, and article writing. The students will learn to create original, unified presentations as they plan and incorporate the yearbook theme. The staff members will also become familiar with digital design programs as the entire yearbook is designed online.
